Laurie Schaffer, Principal Deputy General Counsel, Department of the Treasury, will be our guest speaker at the Exchequer Club luncheon on Wednesday, April 20, 2022.

Laurie Schaffer is currently serving as the Principal Deputy General Counsel at the Treasury Department, having previously served as Treasury acting general counsel from January 2021 through February 2022.  In that role, she was the chief legal officer at Treasury overseeing the work of the General Counsel’s office on the debt limit, implementation of Treasury’s pandemic programs established in the American Rescue Plan, various tax regulations, OFAC sanctions work, CFIUS transactions, etc.  Prior to joining Treasury, Laurie was the Deputy General Counsel for Banking Regulation and Policy at the Federal Reserve Board.  Laurie previously served from 2008-2011 in the Treasury Department as the Assistant General Counsel for Banking and Finance. She has extensive experience working on significant legislative and regulatory matters relating to the financial services industry including the Dodd-Frank Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, enhanced prudential standards regulations, the Volcker rule, FSOC designations, and other matters.  Laurie also served as General Counsel of Charles Schwab Bank and was the lead lawyer at the Charles Schwab Company supporting the successful establishment establish of the de novo charter for the bank. Earlier in her career, she served as a counsel for the House Banking Committee. Laurie is a graduate of Fordham University Law School and the American University, School of International Service.
